Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about using Wise to receive payments in Kenya and Africa.

  • Yes, absolutely. Kenyans can sign up for Wise, open a multi-currency account, and receive USD, GBP, EUR, and many other currencies. You can also convert to KES and transfer directly to your M-Pesa or local bank account.

  • Opening a Wise account is completely free. There is a one-time fee to activate the multi-currency account (currently around $5–$9 depending on your currency). After that, receiving money via ACH bank transfer from the US is free. Conversion fees are transparent and low, and clearly shown before you confirm any transaction.

  • You'll need:

    • Valid government-issued ID (National ID or Passport)

    • A selfie for verification

    • Proof of address (utility bill, bank statement, or rental agreement)

No business registration required if you're signing up as an individual.

  • Most Wise accounts are approved within a few hours to 1 business day. In some cases, if additional verification is needed, it may take 2-3 business days. Once approved, you can immediately start using your account.

  • Yes, and this is one of the biggest advantages. When you give your client your Wise US bank details (routing number + account number), they make a normal domestic bank transfer from their US bank. It's something they already know how to do. They don't need to sign up for anything new. The transfer is fast, free, and familiar to them.

  • After signing up for Wise:

    • Go to "Balances" or "Open a balance"

    • Select USD (US Dollar)

    • Wise will generate your US bank account details

    • You'll get a routing number and account number

You can then share these with your clients for payments.

  • Wise does not impose arbitrary limits like PayPal. You can receive large amounts as long as you've completed their standard identity verification. For very large transactions, Wise may request additional documentation, which is normal for any regulated financial institution.

  • ACH transfers from the US: Usually 1-3 business days
Wire transfers: Same day or next business day
International transfers: Varies by country, typically 1-2 business days

  • Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate, the same rate you see on Google or Reuters. This is the real rate, with no markup. Banks and services like Western Union add 3-10% on top of this rate. Wise doesn't.

  • Wise charges a small, transparent conversion fee (usually around 1-2% depending on the currency pair). This fee is shown upfront before you confirm the conversion. Even with this fee, you still get a much better rate than Western Union, PayPal, or local banks.

  • Yes! This is one of the best features. You can hold your earnings in USD (or 40+ other currencies) and only convert to KES when you need it. This is great for:

    • Saving in a stable currency

    • Timing your conversions when the exchange rate is favorable

    • Avoiding unnecessary conversion fees

  • From your Wise account:

    • Select "Send money"

    • Choose Kenya as destination

    • Enter the amount in USD or KES

    • Add your M-Pesa number or bank account details

    • Confirm the transfer

Money typically arrives within a few hours to 1 business day.

  • Wise is a regulated financial institution, not a payments processor like PayPal. It operates under strict financial regulations in multiple countries. While no financial account is 100% immune to review, Wise is dramatically more stable for international receiving than PayPal. Thousands of African freelancers use it as their primary payment method without issues.

  • Yes. Wise is regulated by financial authorities in multiple countries including the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and holds licenses in the US, EU, and many other jurisdictions. Your money is held in segregated accounts, separate from Wise's operating funds.

  • Wise has actual customer support you can reach via:

    • In-app chat support

    • Email support

    • Phone support in some countries

Plus, if you signed up through my link and get stuck, you can reach out to me directly and I'll help you resolve the issue.

  • PayPal has serious issues for Kenyan users:

    • Accounts get randomly closed with no warning

    • Funds held for 180 days with no recourse

    • Poor exchange rates (3-5% worse than mid-market)

    • Limited support for Kenya

    • Withdrawal limits and high fees

Wise is a regulated financial institution with real bank accounts, transparent fees, and far fewer account closure issues.

  • Western Union problems:

    • Terrible exchange rates (10-15 KES below market rate per USD)

    • Must collect cash in person

    • Can't hold foreign currency

    • High fees on top of bad rates

    • Old-fashioned, inconvenient process

On $500, you lose Ksh 5,000-7,500 just in exchange rate markup with Western Union.

  • Yes! Wise works both ways. You can send money internationally at the same great rates. This is perfect for:

    • Paying international contractors

    • Sending money to family abroad

    • Purchasing from international suppliers

    • Paying for international services or subscriptions

  • Wise will tell you exactly what went wrong (blurry photo, expired ID, etc.). You can resubmit better documents. If you're having trouble, contact Wise support or reach out to me and I'll help you figure out what's needed.

  • Yes! You can hold 40+ currencies in your Wise account simultaneously. This is perfect if you work with clients in different countries (US, UK, EU, etc.).

  • No. I'm an independent Wise user and affiliate partner. I earn a commission when you sign up through my link and complete a transaction. But I'm not a Wise employee, I'm a Kenyan online worker just like you, sharing what worked for me.

  • Three reasons:

    • Kenyan-specific guidance: I know the exact steps for Kenyan users

    • Ongoing support: Even after setup, you can reach out with questions

  • No. You pay exactly the same fees whether you sign up through my link or directly through Wise. The commission comes from Wise, not from you. You get the same account, same rates, same everything, plus free help from me.
