The Problem, You Know This Too Well

Every Kenyan online worker has felt this pain.
You are not alone.

PayPal Account Permanently Closed. Zero Warning

You log in one day. "Account permanently limited." 180 days before you touch your own money. No real reason. No live agent. Just an AI telling you to wait. Your income, frozen.

Venmo, CashApp, Stripe. Not Available for You

Your client wants to pay you. Your friend in the US uses CashApp, or bank transfer. But these apps don't support Kenya. It's like the whole world is connected… except you.

Western Union Eating Your Exchange Rate Alive

USD/KES is at 129. You check Western Union. They buy your dollar at 116. That's Ksh 13 per dollar you're losing. On $500, that's Ksh 6,500 gone, straight into their pocket.

Local Providers Want a Full Business Registration Just to Start

You're a freelancer testing an idea. You want to accept payment. They ask for business certificates, ID, bank statements, KYC… and then make you wait weeks for approval. Your US competitor signed up in five minutes without providing these details.

You Did Everything Right, But Still Can't Get Paid

Collecting Cash from Western Union in 2026

You have to physically go to a Western Union agent. Carry cash home. It's not a bank. You can't hold, save, or grow your foreign earnings. It is a 1990s solution in a 2026 world.

Real Talk. My Story I lost months of income because PayPal closed my account for no reason

Real Talk. My Story

I lost months of income because PayPal closed my account for no reason.

"I was not given a reason. And once your account is closed, it is near impossible to reach a real human. From then on, it's just AI responses."

I earn all my money online. For a long time, PayPal was my only option. I would see people on social media saying their accounts got closed randomly, and I'd think, what are they talking about? Mine is fine.

Then it happened to me. I received a message: account permanently closed. Wait 180 days. No reason. No explanation. No live agent. Just me, staring at the screen, with a client ready to pay me and no way to receive the money.

I took a 2–3 month break, scrambling for a solution. That's when I found Wise.

With Wise, I opened a real US bank account, routing number, account number, everything. I gave my client those details. The transfer went through immediately. No flags. No holds. No 180-day waiting. Just money in my account, like a normal human being.

I have used Wise ever since. I receive money, I hold it in USD, I convert to KES only when I need it, at the real exchange rate, not the robbery rate Western Union gives. It changed everything for me. That's why I'm here, sharing this with you.

Once your account is set up, navigate to the "Open a balance" section and select USD. Wise will generate your real US bank account details, routing number, account number, everything. This is what makes Wise different from every other option.

3

Give your US bank details to your client

Copy your routing number and account number, send them to your client, and they make a standard US domestic bank transfer (ACH). It costs them nothing extra. It costs you nothing to receive it. The money lands in your Wise account, usually within minutes to a few hours.

4

Hold your USD or convert at the real rate

You don't have to convert immediately. Hold your money in USD and let it sit. When you're ready, convert to KES at the mid-market rate, the same rate you see on Google. Not a bank rate. Not a Western Union rate. The real rate.

Stop giving away your hard-earned money in bad exchange rates.

Every time you exchange USD with Western Union or most local banks, you lose between Ksh 10–15 per dollar. On $1,000, that's Ksh 10,000–15,000 just… gone. Wise uses the mid-market rate, the rate you actually deserve.

Common Questions

You've got questions. Here are the straight answers.

  • Yes. Kenyans can sign up for Wise, open a multi-currency account, and receive USD, GBP, EUR and many other currencies. You can also convert to KES and transfer directly to your M-Pesa or local bank account.

  • Wise is a regulated financial institution, not a payments processor like PayPal. It operates under strict financial regulations in multiple countries. While no financial account is 100% immune to review, Wise is dramatically more stable for international receiving than PayPal. Thousands of African freelancers use it as their primary payment method.

  • Opening a Wise account is completely free. There is a one-time fee to activate the multi-currency account (currently around $5–$9 depending on your currency). After that, receiving money via ACH bank transfer from the US is free. Conversion fees are transparent and low, and clearly shown before you confirm any transaction.

  • Yes, and this is one of the biggest advantages. When you give your client your Wise US bank details (routing number + account number), they make a normal domestic bank transfer from their US bank. It's something they already know how to do. They don't need to sign up for anything new. The transfer is fast, free, and familiar to them.

  • Wise does not impose arbitrary limits like PayPal was reported to do. You can receive large amounts as long as you've completed their standard identity verification. For very large transactions, Wise may request additional documentation, which is normal for any regulated financial institution.

  • Absolutely. And you won't be doing it alone. I've been through the entire Wise setup process myself, and I know every screen, every step. If you sign up through my link and get stuck anywhere, reach out to me directly and I will personally guide you through it, for free. That's not a sales pitch, that's a genuine offer.
